When will this acclaimed gay film hit Oz?

When will this acclaimed gay film hit Oz?

It’s received praise from every stop on its festival circuit run, picked up a swag of awards and wooed film lovers with its stunning trailer – but when will we see Andrew Haigh’s Weekend in Australia?

The film follows the story of two men who engage in a one-night stand that becomes something more.

The unconventional love story was shot on location in Nottingham, UK last year and stars newcomers Tom Cullen and Chris New.

It’s directed by Andrew Haigh, a former film editor who worked on features such as Ridley Scott’s Gladiator.

Despite picking up an audience award at the SXSW Film Festival this year, Grand Jury Prize and Best Actor Award at the Nashville Film Festival, the Grand Jury Prize at Outfest and opening the BAM Cinemafest in New York, the film is yet to be picked up by an Aussie distributor either on DVD or for a theatrical release.

The New York Times has called the film: “Perfectly realised…a bracing, present-tense exploration of sex, intimacy and love”, while the LA Weekly went further: “Weekend is a small, perfect thing – a likely classic and not just a gay one”.

Weekend will be released theatrically in the US on September 23. We think it’s high time we saw it down here.
