Feathers celebrates 21 years

The longest-running gay women’s social club on the Gold Coast celebrated 21 years last Saturday.

Non-profit organisation Feathers took over the Nerang RSL Club for the celebration, with guest artists Dangerous Curves providing entertainment for the crowd of same-sex attracted women, young and old.

“The birthday bash was a huge success. A record-breaking 151 girls attended the dance,” Feathers treasurer Charmaine Martin said.

“We paid an honourable tribute to the women who have been before us, for without them we would not be able to express who we are today.”

One of the special guests honoured was Iris Coulson, who was one of the founding members of Feathers and whose deceased partner Heather (nicknamed Feathers) inspired the group’s name.

Several women who attended the celebration had been at the group’s Suppa Dance in 1991 — the first Feathers dance event.

Group members volunteer their time to enrich the lives of lesbians on the Gold Coast, with the membership representing a range of ages, backgrounds, ethnicities and professions.

As well as organising events with a relaxed and non-judgmental environment, Feathers supports worthy causes and charities that are part of the LGBT community.

Feathers holds monthly activities and one-off events for same-sex attracted local women.
