Gay students protected in bill

web_gay_schoolProtections for gay students have been written in to a proposed revision of the US’s education reform bill commonly known as No Child Left Behind.

The amendment would ban discrimination against any student perceived to be gay or identifying as gay, with federal funding threatened if schools failed to provide adequate measures against bullying or harassment.

The language of the revision has been compared favourably to a 1972 law protecting the rights of female athletes in high schools and universities.
