Life a picnic for JOY

JOY 94.9 will send tasty sounds from Adelaide’s gay and lesbian cultural festival Feast over the airwaves in November.

The station will send 10 volunteers to broadcast Feast’s Picnic in the Park on November 27. President David McCarthy said it was the first time the station had travelled west for an outside broadcast.

“This is an exciting step for JOY which generally broadcasts from local Victorian events other than the iconic Sydney Mardi Gras,” McCarthy said.

JOY does a number of outside broadcasts in Victoria, including Midsumma Carnival Day, Pride March, ChillOut, and a youth-focused show from Princess Hill Secondary College.

Now in its 15th year, Feast is South Australia’s largest gay and lesbian festival, over two weeks. The JOY broadcast has been funded by a $5000 grant from South Australian Tourism.

Listeners will be able to tune in to the broadcast online.

JOY is Australia’s only 24-hour LGBTI-dedicated radio station.

The Community Broadcasting Association has reported JOY’s podcasts – of more than 60 programs – are the most downloaded of all its member community radio stations across Australia.
