Malta: boost in marriage support

A survey by a major Maltese newspaper has found 60 percent of 18 to 34-year-olds agree with the introduction of marriage for same-sex couples compared to just 23 percent of those over 55 years.

The survey also showed support for gay marriage increasing by 13 points overall since 2007, when the first MaltaToday survey on this issue was conducted.

An absolute majority of 51.2 percent are still opposed to the introduction of marriage equality while 42 percent agree with gay marriage.

Those in favour of same-sex marriages include a significant 9 percent who specified that they agree with the introduction of same-sex marriage but disagree with these couples adopting children.

Justice Minister Chris Said recently confirmed that a new cohabitation law will formally recognise same-sex unions but it remains unclear whether these couples will have the same rights and obligations as married couples.

It also remains unclear when the cohabitation law — first promised in 1998 — will finally see the light of day.
