A treasured memory of watching Dolly Parton from the audience became the emotional centre of Miley Cyrus’ Hollywood Bowl concert, as the singer returned to the venue to honour her late godmother.

Performing in Los Angeles on Friday, October 16, Cyrus shared her grief with fans before singing Jolene, as she shared her personal connection to the country legend with the audience.

“Me and Dolly, we are eternal. Nothing in this life could ever tear us apart,” Cyrus told the crowd on Friday.

“And I’m going to see her again. And I can’t fucking wait because I miss her,” she added, wiping away tears with a tissue before singing a touching tribute to the country music star.

Selena Gomez and Christina Aguilera were among those in attendance for the performance at the Hollywood Bowl, a venue that held fond memories of her godmother for the singer.

She recalled attending a Dolly Parton concert there and asking for the chance to simply watch, without joining her godmother onstage; Parton agreed, then promptly made her presence known to the crowd.

During the show, Parton opened with The Best of Both Worlds, the theme from Cyrus’ Disney series Hannah Montana, she then announced that her goddaughter was sitting in the audience. Cyrus’ hopes of quietly enjoying the concert were over.

What felt embarrassing then has since become a cherished reminder of their relationship.

“I feel her more now than ever,” Cyrus said.

An image of Parton appeared on stage as Cyrus sang her own version of Dolly’s iconic song, Jolene. Later in the concert, Cyrus held a heart shaped frame containing a photograph of her “Aunt Dolly”.

A longtime friend of Billy Ray Cyrus, Parton became Miley’s godmother in 1992 and later appeared alongside her as Aunt Dolly in Hannah Montana. Their relationship continued to grow over the years as Dolly supported Miley throughout her career and every growing profile in the music industry.

Parton died on August 25, aged 80, following a battle with cancer.
