Advertising for equality

Advertising for equality

A second advertisement calling for equal rights for same-sex couples will be printed in The Australian on Monday 1 October.
The advertisement is part of a campaign by support and action group Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) to create public awareness of the discrimination faced by same-sex couples in long-term relationships.
An earlier PFLAG advertisement from heterosexuals who supported legal equality for lesbian or gay couples appeared in the newspaper on Monday 13 August.
It asked John Howard and Kevin Rudd to end legal discrimination against same-sex partners and included the names of the family and friends of lesbians and gays who contributed to the cost of the publication.
The wording of the new advertisement was yet to be determined, PFLAG national spokeswoman Shelley Argent said. This time, however, couples and individuals would be welcome to contribute.
“This time the message should come from everyone who believes in equality,” she said.
“We are particularly asking those in long-term same-sex relationships or individual lesbians and gays if they would like to donate at least $55.”
The names of those who donate will appear on the advertisement, if desired.
The first advertisement cost $6,000 and PFLAG would aim for the same amount again.
Argent said PFLAG would continue to publish advertisements highlighting both ongoing discrimination and growing public opposition to that discrimination.
“Our national leaders are ignoring public support for reform, and we want to attract their attention,” she said.
“With this being an election year it’s important to make our presence felt and our voices heard.”
PFLAG is a non-profit organisation whose members love and care for someone who is lesbian or gay. PFLAG provides support, help and information to families and friends of all gay people.
Donations must be received by Monday 17 September. For more information, or to donate, contact Shelley at [email protected].
