Beware of the WOW factor

The World of Women Film Festival amps up the wow factor for its 15th birthday with 14 world premieres and 12 Australian premieres all scheduled to hit the screens at the Chauvel from 1 to 5 October.

The internationally recognised festival aims to showcase the creative talents of women involved in film production, from cinematographers to directors and producers alike. This is an out and out celebration of all that women have to contribute to the arts, minus the frilly pink cliches and any mention of chick flicks, Festival Director Sil-Nyin Cameron says.

It gives opportunity for women in the film industry to showcase their work and it’s important to say that filmmaking is a collaborative, teamwork effort.

We’re trying to break down the stereotype of what is a woman’s film so, when we grouped these films together, we wanted people to see how diverse it was, Cameron says of the five-day line-up. The WOW Festival features everything from comedy to drama and challenging documentaries, all under the one theme of seeing the world through the eyes of women.

It’s quite an individual viewpoint that we’re taking -“ to look at the world through the eyes of women -“ and we feel that’s an extremely important viewpoint to show to the general public, Cameron says, attesting to the need for such a festival not only to showcase but to inspire women.

If you look at the statistics from Screen Australia, there’s really a severe under-representation of women, particularly in technical roles. So part of the role of WOW is to act to show films as role models almost, to inspire young women and young women entering the film world as well.

There will also be a series of directors’ talks and workshops put on throughout the week to further encourage viewers to get involved with cinema.
