Convicts getting stronger

The Sydney Convicts have a solid chance of defending the Bingham Cup and world champion title next year after a strong showing in Sydney’s suburban competition.
Despite narrowly missing a finals berth at the weekend with a tight loss to Oakhill, club president Andrew Purchas said the team was well prepared to defend its gay rugby world cup title next year.
“The boys can be extremely proud of what they’ve achieved this year,” Purchas said.
“We’ve shown that we can field a tough competitive team in the suburban comp and have gained the respect and admiration of the straight clubs.”
Team manager Iain Jepsen was also optimistic despite the loss.
“The boys never let up. Their defence was impenetrable with Oakhill not being able to get a try across the line,” he said.
“This puts the club in a strong position to defend our titles at next year’s Bingham Cup competition in Ireland”.
