Creating a stylish office at home

Isn’t technology marvellous? When it’s not crashing and causing you grief and losing you money, it really is the life-force of our generation.
Never before have we had so much information at our fingertips, so many possibilities, so many opportunities to create. But working for yourself takes time, effort, and some very long hours. Thus, the need for a pleasant workspace at home is like water to a fish.
Start with the desk. This does not have to be one of those things with a pair of drawers attached to the side. In fact, for a beautifully spacious feel that just aches to be covered messily with important papers, go for a long and slightly narrow table.
A modern feel can be achieved by using a plain white or clear glass top with simple trestle legs. Or, for a more classic approach, go for a dark timber library table. The solid lines and ample space will give the room an instant air of professionalism.
When it comes to office seating, most people head straight to the wheelie chair. This is often about as stylish as Tom Cruise’s haircut. Be sure to check out some dining chairs, a simple high-backed dark leather number for the sleek and classic look, or something made from moulded plastic can provide an interesting modern take, especially if you choose the right colour.
As this is your home office, you are free to avoid the deathly fluorescent lighting hell that the average company inflicts on its slaves. Go for a simple desk lamp to provide spotlighting, excellent for intricate work (but be aware of the cheapies – they can make for a very hot and power-hungry light). For the main lighting, a tall stand-alone lamp provides an ambient alternative to boring overheads.
The temptation for merely functional surrounds is usually too easy but, for those doing a lot of work at home, it can actually be harmful to your state of mind.
Many large companies are beginning to understand the importance of an attractive workspace, with the emergence of the Breakout Room, the new must-have for any business serious about retaining the freshest new talent of tomorrow.
So why not treat yourself with the same dignity? You work hard, you deserve it.
