Dancing With The Stars

Dancing With The Stars

Dancing With The Stars is a simple but appealing competition which pairs experienced ballroom dancers alongside Aussie celebrities.

This week there was sloppy footwork, bad timing and poor flow -“ but unfortunately, that was just the camera work.
Even accounting for the usual mishaps of live television the show was hilarious. Gasp as the cameras occasionally film just the set! Squirm as the voting bar at the base of the screen obliterates the dancers’ feet!

Host Daryl Somers imports his casual schtick from Hey Hey It’s Saturday and it’s strictly annoying. He tells us he can’t read the bottom scores on the monitor; he tells us when he’s just filling in time.

Co-host Sonia Kruger also showed her moves, quickstepping her big foot into her fat mouth. This week many of the contestants had the flu, so Kruger said it should be renamed Dancing with the SARS.

When judge Todd McKenney suggested Matt Shirvington have an affair with his dancing partner, the runner curtly mentioned his wife was in the audience. Incredibly, Kruger chose to bring the gaffe up again and asked Matt if Mrs Shirvington wasn’t just a little tense. She trusts me, Matt said, appalled.

There’s also something stomach-churning about Pauline Hanson’s resurrection as a benign television personality.
Somers said, She may not be sitting in the Senate, but she’s still standing for us. As someone who protested against this monster in Brisbane because she refused to represent her Aboriginal constituents, I felt this was like some kind of nightmare.

To be fair, there are glimmers of goodness. Bec Cartwright of Home And Away fame has chosen the AIDS Trust of Australia as her charity, and they receive a donation each time you vote for her to stay in the comp.

Fans of Ms Cartwright might like to visit the Fox and Lion at Fox Studios every Tuesday, where AIDS Trust staff and her celebrity pals gather to cheer her on.

It’s probably a great night out -“ and the show will surely improve. There’s also some dancing on it, which, I’m pleased to report, is very diverting.

Dancing With The Stars plays each Tuesday night at 7:30pm on Channel 7. To vote for Bec phone 1902 555 011 or SMS BEC to 19 11 77 . Charges apply.
