A fair question: What is the point of Hemmesphere, now that Justin Hemmes says he is too tired to go out any more? While Hemmesphere -“ the bar experience -“ was once the straight community’s own Very Special Place, it all seems a bit naff nowadays. Still, this is a perfectly acceptable collection of very easy-listening songs, with some expected inclusions (like Royksopp’s Remind Me, which is on everything, and Cassius doing another song that sounds exactly the same). There are a few surprises, thankfully, like MeShell Ndegeocello putting a queer spin on Bill Withers’ Who Is He, And What Is He To You? And Roy Ayers’s Love Will Bring Us Back Together really gets the toes tapping. Anyway, it’s worth buying just for the big-voiced Nostalgia 77 version of the White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army, which is a great cover of a great song.
