Labor Senator to speak at Sydney rally

Labor Senator Doug Cameron will address a November 27 marriage equality rally at the Sydney Town Hall.

Senator Cameron recently spoke out against his party’s opposition to same-sex marriage and is one of a number of Labor Left figures who have been pushing for a reversal in the Government’s position since a factional meeting last month.

Following the meeting the Senator told Fairfax papers there would be a “huge push” for a change in the Government’s policy at the next Federal conference of the ALP.

The rally, organised by Community Action Against Homophobia, will also hear from the National Vice President of the Community and Public Sector Union, Lisa Newman, and Wear It Purple Day coordinator Katherine Hudson.

CAAH Sydney Co-convenor Ben Cooper said he was very excited to have Senator Cameron speaking at the rally.

“Having Labor leaders such as Doug Cameron speak out in such a public way puts the Prime Minister under further pressure to introduce legislation that grants equal marriage rights,” said Cooper.

“We strongly encourage people to join Doug Cameron at our upcoming demonstration and by doing so help us make it clear to Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott that we demand an end to the ban on our right to marry.”

The rally is on Saturday November 27 at Town Hall, from 1pm.

  1. People from the Labor Right – Minister Mark Arbib and Australian Workers Union leader Paul Howes – have both supported same-sex marriage.

Kristina Keneally may have her woes, but no one seriously thinks her vocal support of same-sex adoption is the cause.

Voices across the ALP are speaking out – the debate will not go away.

  2. Yep. Give it a conscience vote. With the majority of the public in favour of equal marriage rights, let’s out the bigots who can no longer hide behind Labor/Liberal/National party stances, and let the cowards who support justice have their chance to speak up for what’s right without fear of losing their parliamentary job and pension.

  3. ok slow down!
Inside ALP headquarters. All of the ALP scum know they are are going 2 get a bollacking in Melbourne Inner city seats and definitely Sydney inner city when it comes, Anne Bligh in QLD is political poison! So how do u win the Christian vote and the pink/green vote to stay in office? Read Shakespeare…”me thinketh that she protesteth 2 much..” Gillard holds fast to “marriage is btw a man and a woman..” boom!.. the ACL ( Australian Christian Lobby) supports her and Labor on its website and influences conservatives. Meanwhile, 2 pound pom Left wing Senator Doug Cameron and Right Wing Senator Mark Abib have suddenly seen how ‘unfair’ these laws are! Oh my, aint it sweet, how left and right meet when theyre gonna lose their seats…2 the GREENS. SHOW THEM NO MERCY! Remember it was the labor assholes that supported the Howard govt’s push in 2004 to change the marriage act to discriminate against same sex cpls. They’ll take ur vote and then sit on theyre hands until nxt time round. VOTE GREEN! DONT B FOOLED

  4. It’s not just Labor’s Left:

NSW right wing Minister Mark Arbib has publicly supported gay marriage, as does the member for Melbourne Ports, Michael Danby.

A conscience vote is needed, from both major parties. Change is in the air.

  5. It is fantastic to see pollies who have the balls to come out in support on the marriage equality issue!!!!!

    Will more come along????
