New portraits lift village atmospheres

Two gay and lesbian community hotspots have featured among the winning works in the Sydney, City of Villages art competition.

Jessica Geron saw a lazy afternoon in the colourful village of Newtown in her interpretation of King Street. And Donna Campbell honoured the bustling view from the Colombian Hotel for her depiction of Oxford Street.

The works of Geron and Campbell will join those of eight other finalists on bus shelters and public spaces throughout July, making the streets just that little bit more vibrant.

The 10 finalists received $3,000 prize money each from the city and the best gallery space in town thanks to outdoor advertisers JC Decaux.
