Queensland register plans in doubt

Plans for Queensland to become the fourth state or territory to implement a relationship register for same-sex couples look doubtful after Attorney-General Kerry Shine was moved to the backbench.

Following Premier Anna Bligh’s convincing return to power, she named first time MP and barrister Cameron Dick to the senior ministerial post.

Dick has a background in human rights, discrimination and family law. He was admitted to the bar in 2006. He had previously been the highest legal officer in the South Pacific island of Tuvulu. His office did not return calls this week.

Shine authorised his department to investigate a same-sex relationship register last year after Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland wrote to all state and territory governments advocating the Tasmanian model.

Victoria joined the ACT and Tasmania in offering a register to same-sex couples late last year.
