Soccer players injured in “homophobic assault”

6cae3b18056e96be9a06f591a734cb3fTwo university soccer players have been assaulted in what’s been described as a homophobic attack outside a bar in Griffith, NSW.

The assault allegedly occurred outside the Area Hotel on Griffith’s main street, Banna Ave, in the early hours of Sunday, May 5. The two players, members of the Sydney University Division 1 Women’s soccer team, were in town ahead of an away game against the Yoogali Soccer Club as part of the Football NSW State Cup tournament.

One of the players, 24-year-old Sarah*, whose name has been changed, recounted the incident to University of Sydney student newspaper, Honi Soit.

“At around 3am the last of us were leaving. Me and another team mate ended up kissing outside and a girl literally just flew up to us, screamed out – excuse my French – ‘fucking dyke!’ and just went nuts and continued to punch me in the face and head until the cops came,” she said.

“I’ve got a bruise to my left cheekbone and scratches down the left side of my face as well. I’ve got five or six eggs on my head and she actually pulled out a massive part of my hair, so I’ve got a bit of a bald patch. My coach tried to get her off and he actually got scratched really badly across his chest.”

The second woman who was attacked sustained a head injury and was advised by a doctor to refrain from driving as she may have concussion.

The woman who allegedly assaulted the two players was identified to police by a witness on the scene but was not detained on the night.
