South Africa ‘most likely’ to offer Oz gay adoption

All 11 countries with overseas adoption agreements with Australia currently ban gay couples, but there was reason to believe that would change, a family law professor has claimed.

South Africa was the most likely option, UTS law professor Jenni Millbank told the NSW Parliament’s same-sex adoption inquiry last week.

There is some possibility in the future that South Africa will become a sending country and South Africa does permit same-sex adoption and has done for about 10 years now, she told the inquiry.

But the Government of South Africa is actually very opposed to international adoption generally. I think that if we are looking at the medium to long term I would say they would be the likeliest country who would provide children under the Convention that could be adopted by same-sex couples, if they choose to pursue inter-country adoption in the future.

Millbank said that the list of countries with adoption agreements with Australia changed periodically, but usually included only Third World countries.
