Sunshine Coast goes gay

The Queensland town of Coolum Beach will host its first ever gay pride event this Saturday as the location of the third annual Sunshine Coast Pride Fair Day.

The event, which is hosted by drag sensation Vanessa Wagner, will run from 11am to 5pm a

nd is billed as family friendly.

Organisers say everyone is welcome to attend regardless of age or sexuality.

Around a thousand people are expected to attend with a range of entertainment on offer including bands, games and stalls.

Musical acts on the day will include De Greer-Yindimincarlie and The Yindi Band, Sarah Booker, Pixel and The Great Shame.

There will also be a “Gay’Limpics” held on the day with games including a So You Think You Can Drag competition and an Are You Smarter Than A Drag Queen quiz.

For younger participants there will be a jumping castle and face painting, while the more politically minded may wish to sign a petition in support of same-sex marriage.

Entry is by gold coin donation.

The travelling event was held in Kawana last year and inaugurated in Maroochydore the year before, but organisers hope it has now found a permanent home in Coolum.
