Sydney’s Candy Bar on hold

The planned opening of the world-famous Candy Bar in Sydney has fallen victim to the economic downturn.

But proprietor Kim Lucas says the project is only on hold and plans to open the lesbian bar in the city will be resurrected as the Australian economy continues its upward climb.

The recession hit the UK really badly last year and the bar trade died -” 40 licensed premises a week closing for over a year -” so I got out of Candy Bars in London and Brighton, Lucas told Sydney Star Observer.

Due to that same recession it’s not a good time to be opening a Candy Bar in Sydney -” so London and Sydney will have to wait -˜til the economy picks up before the girls will get a Candy Bar, I am afraid.

Instead there are plans for many Candy Bar parties in Sydney, as well as Auckland, New York, Vancouver, Barcelona and of course London to keep the brand alive and kicking.

Lucas said she had spent more than a year scouting sites in Sydney and had found some perfect locations.

She has also held a couple of Candy Bar-themed parties in Sydney as a way of scouting out the future success of the project.

My favourite bit is Crown St, or anywhere around the Oxford St area, but not on it, she said.

Oxford St is a bit too full-on for Candy Bar, which ideally needs to be in a more chilled location.

The Candy Bar parties I have done in Sydney have certainly made me more sure that the girls are here and up for it. Even at the Bank last night I felt that … the girls are hot here.

Despite the setback, Lucas said she was not tempted to move the project to Melbourne, where there are already a couple of lesbian bars in operation.

Sydney is the global city of the southern hemisphere in my mind, so has a possible clientele that includes Melbourne, New Zealand and the rest of the world, she said.

When people visit Australia they always come to Sydney, but not always to Melbourne.

Lucas is still keen to hear from any potential Candy Bar Sydney investors, who can contact her via Sydney Star Observer.

Ideally an individual or company who want to add the brand to their portfolio and run the business side of things and leave me to the marketing, which is what I do best, would be perfect, she said.
