Sydney’s gay and lesbian choir to celebrate iconic Sondheim in special performance

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir (SGLC) is excited to present Our Time: A Journey Through the Music and Lyrics of Stephen Sondheim this weekend at the Lendlease Theatre.

The concert will feature songs from such classic musicals as Into the Woods, Gypsy, and Sweeney Todd.

President of the SGLC, Neil Hendry, said the choir is delighted to welcome special guest artist Tim Draxl, Helpmann and Logie award nominee and star of stage and screen.

“Having Tim on board truly means that ‘everything’s coming up roses’ as we collaborate with one of Australian cabaret’s leading talents to celebrate one of musical theatre’s most loved composers,” he said.

Co-music director Rachelle Elliott said the choir is looking forward to sharing personal stories alongside Sondheim’s songs.

“Musicals are a vivid expression of people’s emotions,” she said.

“Through Sondheim’s genius, performers and audience alike have been able to experience journeys that echo their own lives.

Our Time will reveal everyday epiphanies, personal victories, and a sprinkling of magic that makes it worth being alive.”

SGLC has been breaking out into song and breaking down barriers with its uplifting and inclusive approach to choral music since its inception.

As one of Australia’s most popular community choirs with over 80 active singing members, it welcomes singers without audition and regardless of their sexuality, gender identity, or music experience.

Our Time: A Journey Through the Music and Lyrics of Stephen Sondheim will have both a matinee and an evening performance on Saturday 21 October.
