Talking with a friend

Many people have had friends they’ve become concerned about due to their drug use. In recent times we have seen some people get into trouble with crystal, but it can also happen with alcohol, cannabis or a variety of other drugs. Here are a couple of tips that friends may find useful in getting a conversation started about drug use and their concerns.
It is important to remember that it is unlikely that your friend would want to have this type of conversation. They may even see it as a betrayal of the friendship. However, this doesn’t mean you are wrong in raising your concerns – the fact that you are taking the risk shows just how much you care.
Offer your friend some reasons why you think this conversation is important, even though it feels uncomfortable and seems to threaten the friendship. For example, “I want to talk to you about something important, but I’m afraid it may make you angry. Will you give me a chance to say what I’m thinking?”
“I” statements are the best when talking with friends. Expressing genuine concerns when problems happen is what friendship is all about. If you present your concern in terms of how you are feeling, your friend may be less likely to be defensive.
Friends often share what they like about each other. Make sure you share what you value about your friend and your friendship. Remember that your friend’s drug use is only one small part of them – highlight the good things.
Do not focus on why they may be using the drug. If you express to your friend what you believe are the underlying reasons behind their drug use, you may end up sounding like an authority figure rather than a friend and they will pull away. Finally, instead of issuing an ultimatum, offer general support for the process of getting ready to change. For example, “If you decide to think more about this, I hope you’ll let me support you.”
Some people do get into trouble with drugs and when they do, they need the support of people around them. Using some of the tips listed above may assist you through this difficult time.
Remember: if you do not want any negative consequences, do not use the drug and, no matter how many times you have used a substance, never be blasé.
