Wired for the future

Homes across the country are enjoying a new prized treasure -” the flat screen television. It can be a maze working your way through the many choices at the local home entertainment store, so it’s important to be on the lookout for the vital features.

When buying a flat screen TV, several important factors should be considered. These include resolution level, screen size and connectivity. But which is better -” plasma or LCD? Sony’s answer: LCD.

LCD has the widest range of screen sizes with full HD taking a lead in resolution choice, said Andrew Hughes from Sony.

LCD TVs have lower power consumption with a potential difference of hundreds of watts, and hundreds of dollars a year in power bills. They are also available in a wider range of screen sizes from 20 inch to 70 inch whereas plasma TVs are typically available in 42 inch and above.

LCD contrast, colour performance and motion reproduction have all improved dramatically in the last few years. Motion reproduction has been improved through the introduction of Sony Motionflow 100Hz, 100Hz PRO and now 200Hz PRO.

LCD screens are lighter, making placement and installation much easier. They also offer better picture quality in varied lighting in bright and dark rooms.

When choosing the new sound system it’s important to look at the High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) connectivity. HDMI allows fast simple connection to compatible TVs and Blu-ray players, saving time, while providing the best quality audio and video.

If Blu-ray and related video and audio benefits are not required, look for systems that allow the connection of BD in the future.

If possible, wire a system for 7.1 channels for premium audio. HDMI is also recommended as this will reduce the volume of cables inside wall cavities and improve reliability, Hughes said. If -˜installing’ refers to an established room having equipment added, S-Air systems will remove the need to run rear channel wiring from front to back of the room (power will still be required for two rear speakers).
