Youth study focuses on nightlife

Is Oxford St still the heart of GLBT social life, and just how prevalent is drug and alcohol use among young gays and lesbians? A new research survey seeks to find all of this out.
Sexuality and nightlife in Sydney: A survey of same-sex attracted young people pays attention to the nighttime activities of Sydneysiders aged 18-25, with particular focus on why and where people choose to use drugs.
“There’s been not a great deal of research done specifically with young people in Australia, and particularly young women and lesbians,” UNSW PhD candidate and survey coordinator Toby Lea explained. The survey provides more than the usual rudimentary attention to lesbians and same-sex attracted women.
Without second-guessing the study’s results, Lea said the information could be useful in the future, for helping design drug and alcohol safety strategies for young people.
