Leather Pride postponed until April

The Melbourne Leather Pride (MLP) Festival has been moved to April 2011.

MLP festival director Alex Schoeffel said moving the festival — originally scheduled for next month — would ensure the event was properly resourced and did not clash with the new Pride March Fair in Peel St on December 12.

“Its very sad to have to move the event again, but we really want to prove that it is both a world-class event and that it’s sustainable,” Schoeffel told Southern Star Observer.

The festival will now run from April 1–10 next year.

Schoeffel said the extra time will allow the board of management to incorporate into a tourism and events association to ensure the festival is representative of the entire Leather, Kink, Bear and Fetish communities, as well as encourage greater female participation.

He added that the move to April would still allow plenty of time for the Mr Leather Australia/New Zealand winner to travel the International Mr Leather competition in Chicago in May.

Contestants from further afield, including Perth and Adelaide, are expected to attend next year’s event which is usually dominated by entrants from the eastern seaboard.

The Mr Leather contest is scheduled to be held on April 9 at the Fitzroy Town Hall.

Schoeffel said it’s likely the festival program would expand to include a film program for ‘adventurous’ members of the community, as well as a music program.
