New JOY GM to take over in November

A Western Australian will soon be taking command at Melbourne’s gay and lesbian radio station, JOY94.9.
Hailing from Perth, Danae Gibson was last week appointed general manager and will take the reins in November.
“I’m jubilant,” Gibson told Southern Star. “It’s an exciting opportunity.”
She and her partner will relocate from Perth to Melbourne to take up the position.
“It’s a big commitment to make but worth it, I reckon,” she said. “There’s a very long list on the fridge at home.”
Gibson cut her teeth on Perth community radio station RTRfm. She began broadcasting in 1992 and hosted the station’s first gay and lesbian program, Sheer Queer.
Although RTRfm is a strictly gay and lesbian station, Gibson has been closely aligned with the Perth GLBT community for many years. As well as her queer-themed radio programs, she was a reporter with the now-defunct gay and lesbian newspaper, Westside Observer.
“I’ve always maintained my identity in the community broadcasting area,” she said.
In recent years, Gibson has been presenting a show on RTRfm called Morning Magazine, a variety entertainment and current affairs breakfast program, as well as teaching radio broadcasting at Central TAFE in Perth.
She has also produced programs for ABC regional radio.
A keen sports fan and Fremantle Dockers supporter, Gibson said she’s looking forward to living in the home of Aussie Rules.
“We don’t have a lot of sports on RTR, but there’s always a tinge in whichever program I’m involved in,” she said.
“When I went to meet the staff at JOY94.9, I was going to wear my [Fremantle Dockers] jumper and I’ve already had several football discussions. I’m a true AFL follower.”
Gibson said she likes radio programs that include a mix of music, current affairs and talk and her music favourites include funk, soul and disco.
“I was more nervous coming out as a disco fan than a football fan,” she said with a laugh. “I’m a massive Stevie Wonder fan.”
So what changes to the on-air line-up can we expect from this disco-loving football fan?
“It’s too early to say, there’s a lot of good stuff that needs careful maintenance and we’ll discover the rest as we step into it,” she said.
