Peninsula gets proud

Human rights and health specialists will join forces this month to discuss health problems faced by LGBTI people in Melbourne’s south.

Mornington Peninsula health service Peninsula Health will host the public forum, Peninsula Proud, on April 28 to look at equal opportunity law and offer information on specific LGBTI health and wellness services.

Participants will also have a chance to win five nights’ accommodation in a beachfront apartment at Turtle Cove resort in Cairns.

The event will include a Q&A section with Health Services Commissioner Beth Wilson, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission Acting Commissioner Karen Toohey, People Living with HIV/AIDS Victoria spokesperson Shane Boyd, and comedian and author Nelly Thomas.

Peninsula Health’s complex services community health director Simon Ruth said the event was an initiative of the service’s LGBTI community advisory group, set up in mid-2010.

“The advisory group works with the health service and with local GPs and healthcare professionals to provide more sensitive healthcare for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer people,” Ruth said.

“The event is a first for this region, and has already attracted a lot of interest from people who attended Melbourne’s Midsumma Festival in January.”

Peninsula Proud will be held at winery Hickinbotham of Dromana on Saturday, April 28, 1.30-5pm.
