Queer radio fights for its life

Three LGBTI radio programs at community radio station 4ZZZ will combine forces to stay afloat this weekend with a joint fundraiser.

The station desperately needs a new transmitter to keep broadcasting, including its six hours of LGBTI programming.

The presenters of Dykes on Mykes, Queer Radio and Gay Savvy will hold Ignite Your Gay Mission this Saturday, March 3 at the Wickham Hotel.

The proceeds from gold coin donation entry will go to Transmission Ignition, the campaign to raise $50,000 for the new transmitter. The line-up includes Kristy Apps, Something Whiskey, DJ Frankie Trouble and Eleanor Jackson. There will also be a sausage sizzle and lucky door
prizes.

“The staff and everyone at the Wickham are very excited to support both 4ZZZ and the LGBTI radio programs that are broadcast each week on the station,” Wickham Hotel manager Ruth Gardner said.

“Ignite Your Gay Mission is a great event because it includes all elements of 4ZZZ through being radically independent, showcasing local queer artists and supporting diversity on the airwaves.”

Dykes on Mykes and Queer Radio have been permanent fixtures every Wednesday night on 4ZZZ for more than 20 years and Gay Savvy joined the stable of LGBTI programs on Zed Digital when it launched last year.

“4ZZZ’s commitment to the queer community is strong. We’re very pleased to be an essential part of the station,” Queer Radio presenter Mark Jeffery said.

“All of the LGBTI shows have a great role reaching people who aren’t necessarily involved in the gay scene. Young people in particular find the programs a great support. You can tune in at home, online or through apps on your phone.”

You can hear Dykes on Mykes 7-9pm and Queer Radio 9-11pm on 102.1FM, audio streaming live at www.4zzzfm.org.au

Gay Savvy airs every Thursday 8-10pm on Zed Digital.

INFO: Ignite Your Gay Mission is on Saturday, March 3 at the Wickham Hotel, Fortitude Valley, noon-5pm.
