Rudd’s sister ‘must apologise’

Marriage equality advocates and Holocaust survivors have demanded an apology from Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd’s sister following her statement that marriage equality is being pushed by “a global gay Gestapo”.

In an interview with The Australian newspaper, Loree Rudd accused ALP members of being brainwashed after four state Labor conferences endorsed changes to the Marriage Act to allow same-sex marriage under federal law.

Australian Marriage Equality national convener Alex Greenwich said Ms Rudd’s statement had no place in mature public debate and will incite hatred against supporters of equality.

“We call on those who oppose equality to condemn Ms Rudd’s outburst, and for Ms Rudd herself to withdraw her comments and apologise for them”, Greenwich said.

“Ms Rudd has set back her cause by comparing supporters of civil rights to an organisation that was responsible for mass murder, including the mass murder of homosexuals.”

In the interview Ms Rudd admitted she was lobbying Labor MPs to reject marriage equality, threatening to quit the party if the party platform is changed at ALP National Conference in December.

A divorced nurse and devout Christian, she has written to every MP in federal parliament, fellow Labor members in Queensland and newspapers, stating her opposition to marriage equality.

She told The Australian that the former prime minister was aware of her views but that she had embarked on her campaign without his knowledge.

“I have been delighted with Kevin and then with Julia in her support of the traditional view of marriage,” she told the newspaper.

Rudd said there was a worldwide gay movement that “fed propaganda” to lobby for marriage equality.

“I call them the global gay Gestapo: it is the lobbying movement that is brainwashing people, particularly the young in the community that this (homosexuality) is an optional extra in life,” she said.

Her comments were also criticised by gay Australians affected by the Holocaust.

Holocaust survivor Frederick Weisinger, who lives in Sydney and wrote a submission supporting marriage equality to a 2009 Senate inquiry into the issue, said: “I spent three years in a concentration camp as a child, and I am horrified by this comparison between the Gestapo and ordinary citizens like me who just want to be treated equally.

“Before she makes such offensive comments, Ms Rudd should read about the horrors perpetrated by the Gestapo, particularly how it hounded, persecuted and killed homosexuals in large numbers.”

Marriage equality advocate Jackie Stricker-Phelps, who is the wife of former AMA President, Kerryn Phelps, also added her voice to the outrage.

“During the Second World War, members of my family had their human rights taken away and were murdered at the hands of the Gestapo,” she said

“To compare the work of today’s human right’s advocates to the atrocities of those monsters is a shocking indictment on anyone making these claims.”

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said that Rudd’s comments were “deeply offensive” and urged her to immediately withdraw her remarks, claiming they were homophobic and inflammatory.

“While all members of the Australian community are entitled to their personal views, it is extremely concerning that in the 21st century certain individuals think that it is acceptable to discriminate against others based on their sexual orientation,” she said.

“Everyone in Australia, regardless of their sexual orientation, has the right to be treated with respect and dignity, and to live their lives free of discrimination, harassment and bullying.”

  1. Christians…why don’t you fuck off and find some other happyclapper website to peddle your fairytale crap on.

  2. Dave, do you honestly believe that rubbish?

Do you need to stoop so low by equating yourself to a genetically manipulated fruit fly in order to justify your sexuality? I am pretty sure human beings could justify any behaviour they wanted by finding examples in nature. It’s an extremely tenuous argument at best and your continued use of it suggests you are trying to convince yourself more than anyone else.

The problem with the Catholic Church during the Holocaust was that the church was following the state and failing to provide a moral voice against those who were doing wrong. It had lost its backbone and was no longer providing biblical guidance. The same as has happened to your beloved Uniting Church as it wallows in the same theological wasteland attributable to the liberal German theologians of the 19th century. It is the spineless churches such as the Uniting Church of Australia that are too afraid to adhere to biblical doctrine that best represent the church during Hitler’s Germany. Jesus preached a message of tough love as well as just love; if he observed people doing wrong he told them….

Honestly, where do you get your information from? What lines in the bible did Hitler use to justify the Holocaust? As amusing as it is, it is also a little sad that you continue to believe that Christianity and homosexuality are compatible. Similarly, it’s genuinely insulting to so many people that you insist on drawing parallels between your situation in Australia today and the Holocaust. The words disgusting and farcical don’t even begin to describe it.

  3. Dave
Why is it when questioned people like you always use the old homophobic crap, ewww people are picking on me. This has everything to do with labor/greens pushing the boundaries like always, left wing crap. I think labor are now irrelevant and been taken over by the extreme gay Lobby when they waste time on gay marriage when there are more important things to discuss like jobs, economy, floods, Losing elections etc .

  4. Bob brown is a socialist and under socialism media is controlled by the state and there is no questioning of politicians by the media… This is what brown wants, but unlike the abc and sbs which is left wing and controlled by the government other media will not just do what brown wants and fall into line and support his idiotic policies. He wants to be heard but when questioned he goes into attack mode, what next brown KGB ? To arrest reporters… Or maybe you will get your supporters getup to protest and threaten the media just like they threaten big business ..

  5. @Iain is a supporter for Australian Christian Lobby from his previous posts.

@Pay and John Denis- Scientist can genetically replicate gay fruit flies and lesbian mice. Like us, these things did not need your hate to know they are natural. Perhaps you need to do some of the Uniting Church anti-homophobic programs.

@Oliver-Officially, and wrongly I believe, your church condemns you, and will not even give you communion. In fact some of your churches employ security guards to get rid of homosexuals. I recall Xavier High School in Albury recently published in their news letter for homosexuals to be removed from the face of the Earth. So officially according to Church Hierarchy, there is no such thing as a practicing homosexual Catholic. Rudd’s comments attack you, as if you are to understood the history of the Catholic Church, the Church Hierarchy got the Gestapo to take away gay parishioners also.

According to historians David Bankier and Hans Mommsen a through knowledge of the Holocaust was well within the reach of the German bishops, if they wanted to find out. According to historian Michael Phayer, “a number of bishops did want to know, and they succeeded very early on in discovering what their government was doing to the Jews in occupied Poland”. Wilhelm Berning, for example, knew about the systematic nature of the Holocaust as early as February 1942, only one month after the Wannsee Conference. Most German Church historians believe that the church leaders knew of the Holocaust by the end of 1942, knowing more than any other church leaders outside the Vatican. http://www.remnantofgod.org/nazircc.htm The Catholic Church Hirachy turned on many ordinary Catholics during the war, and even some of their own Priest. In recent years, the previous Pope said sorry to the Jews for the role of the Catholic Church helping the Nazi’s. The Church at that time, would have you sent to the Gas Chambers by the Gestapo. And by the way, I have gay Catholic Liberal voters who are dear friends also. Just because we are gay does not mean we are clones and agree on everything.

Hitler used a few lines in the Bible to justify the killing of millions, he was Catholic. So if we are to make laws based on your religion is better than mine, we will be headed towards disaster, and for great cruelty. This is what some in the Australian Christian Lobby are advocating.

  6. John Denis..What are you doing hanging around on this site – you would have a lot more fun on Grinder ( and take the 50 year old virgin Oliver with you )

  7. Published in the Australian.I am a homosexual ex employee of News LTD.No one has come to my aid over the years I have been trying to expose my familys treatment at the hands of Mr Murdochs KKK like thugs in Qld.This media organisation that has sent shock waves through the British Parliment with its imoral behaviour will be exposed here in Australia.Thank the stars we have senator Brown.Forget marriage forget discrimination,Forget suicide.Support Brown in his demand for an enquiry into News Ltd in Australia. This enquiry under Browns supervision will go further twards ridding our culture of the likes of Ms Rudd and her ilk than any individual one issue campaign. Her brother bitter Kevin is God father to one of the News Ltd thugs children.Ms Rudd I am your equql lets catch up for dinner sometime

  8. We have a lot of problems in Australia at the moment, labor has a conference and the most important thing on their agenda is gay marriage. This shows how far left wing Aka socialist labor have become, they really have lost it and it is no wonder they are losing support all around australia. Labor has been taken over by the greens and will now become as irrelevant as the democrats. Stop wasting time on this moronic nonsense

  9. Of course Rudd knew his whako sis was writing this piece!! Are u kidding me? It was published in The Australian. Lets not 4get that public servant Rudd under the former Goss Govt of QLD threw money to gays ONLY when it was concerned with Gay health. You c ppl like Rudd and his ilk only equate gays with disease and HIV.Therefore gay marriage is complete anathema to him and his sis. Gay ppl living, breathing and enjoying life must terrify Rudd and Glliard and their skewed view of the world.

  10. K, I assume you may have misunderstood the meaning of the word ‘vindicate’. Anyway, even with interpretive application of the word, I cannot understand why she is in anyway hypocritical.

Dave, your comments continue to be provide me with great amusement as they are so outrageous yet so (i am assuming) sincere.

David, the study of theology has absolutely nothing to do with science as they are two completely different academic fields. To say that science is prevailing over religion is akin to saying science is prevailing over the study of history. Absolute nonsense, and is nothing but a cheap trick used by those who don’t know what they are talking about.

  11. I guess stupidity runs in the family…….she looks like a nut job as well :D

  12. Loree Rudd doesn’t need a medal for her statement.
    She deserves to be canonised.
Its a crying shame that the Australian people need this knee-jerk treatment at the eleventh hour. For decades the worst display of vulgarity has appeared in the Gay Mardis Gras, and now it needs this distract action. Some Australians appear not to know that in some countries homosexuality is a hanging offence. The appalling position taken by the Anglican Archbishop Rowan Williams does no justice to the matter. How pray, can human beings arrive except with one haploid cell from a mother, and one haploid cell from a father? Yet there are goons who think that nature is in error and want the legal system work in their favour. Barbara Cartland made fortune writing romance, (450 novels), with the falling in love process that occurs with only a male and female, anima and animus. Nature just does not work any other way. Gay Gestapo is too kind a term. Perhaps it should be insane Gay Gestopo or perhaps the insane Gay KGB. Critics of Loree Rudd should not regard themselves Australian.
Oh and by the way, I don’t vote Labour…..

  13. @ david – yes she’s just a bogan but it’s a (in some ways) free country and she’s offered her opinion up to public criticism and this is the result. Public debate. If by ‘Gestapo-like movement’ you mean people who are responding to her publicised views, you should re-think your word choice and be more sensitive to the people who actually suffered under the hands of the Gestapo and the Nazi movement and educate yourself on the fact that a lot more than ‘public debate’ went on during those years…..
Apologies if I just repeatecd myself my screen froze when I sent the message before so I thought I’d summarise and send it again…

  14. @ david.. you’re right, Ms. Rudd isn’t the PM or anyone that anybody’s really heard of before, and it seems funny that the opinion of some bogan has caused such an uproar and actually made the news… But this bogan in particular in the position to make her opinions extremely public, more so than your average bogan, and thus opens her point of view to public criticism/acceptance. That’s all this is. If by ‘Gestapo-like movement’ you mean a proportion of the population who feels passionately that equal marriage rights is a no-brainer and how can it be that in an age of science and reason this kind of thing is still being debated, then you should re-think your word choice and be a little more sensitive to the people who suffered at the hands of the Gestapo – a lot more than ‘public debate’ went on when they really had their movement going.

  15. @ Oliver… Every ‘group’ who’s been extremely passionate about something throughout history has been perceived by some to be morally right and by some to be unjust… what about all the women who were burned at the stake for witchcraft, and thousands more men, women and children tortured and killed, over centuries, during the Catholic hey-day? Yet our world now strives to be a ‘free’ one, where people can choose their faith, or choose not to have it, choose whether to be married or not, and really should be able to choose who they marry. Full stop. The comparison between ADVOCATES of a basic civil right to those who made it policy to IMPEND the civil and human rights of others is absurd.

  16. Another religious nut job. Thankfully science is prevailing over religion, and soon these fanatics will be a thing of the past, and we will finally be a truly enlightened society.

  17. I must admit some Gay marriage activists out there come across as true dictators. As a catholic, people have forgotten about the millions of catholics killed and tortured during world war one and two and even more during the communist rezime. Killed and tortured for simply being catholic, to express their beleifs, and of course amongst them were Gay and lesbians. Thats why the catholic church today stands proud! and has every right to. Voting Greens is just like bringing back an anti beleif rezime where society will be dominated by socialism, political correctness and an extreme University educated society, where ant beleivers of religion would be ridiculed and tortured. Religion keeps the balance in life. Thanks, Oliver, Catholic and proud!

  18. @david

But who is taking Ms Rudd to be gassed if their is a Gestapo like movement? Who is shooting people, rounding them up, and putting them on a train going to a death camp? We are accused of being the “Global Gay Gestapo”. Not acting like the Gestapo, but being them.

Using the Murdoch press, to pour hate over us and incite people to kill us and followers, will naturally outrage people, especially in our community, who have been the victims of the NAZI’s. The Gestapo gave us a pink triangle, the Jewish people were given a yellow star.

Using the language of the NAZI party hurts Labor.

  19. Whether I agree with Ms Rudd or not, it seems strange that ‘a nobody’ (JJ’s epithet, above) can engender so much ire for expressing her opinion in colourful, metaphorical language. Maybe there is a Gestapo-like movement trying to brainwash people if anyone dares to criticise them.

  20. So perhaps Ms. Divorcee Rudd can provide a list of exactly who should be allowed to get married. Are atheists allowed? How about people married more than twice? Muslims? Handicapped people? Post-menopausal women? And so on.

Or maybe Ms. Rudd’s opinions don’t matter in the least. People like Ms. Rudd need to understand, perhaps we should talk slowly and in small words, that who I get married to is none of her business.

  21. Iain, I have no idea upon what basis she forms her views of equal marriage being something that society should not strive towards, but I reckon it’s got something to do with deep seated Christian values. Dogmatic Christian teaching caused people to vindicate those who were divorced, not that long ago either, and she would have been seen as a ruined and worthless deviant, and is extremely lucky that society’s moral standing has developed and was flexible enough over time to understand that individual circumstance doesn’t affect your value as a person within society. She’s completely hypocritical.

  22. It seems that conservative Christians see marriage as their territory and that simply standing up for our rights is an invasion by the gay terrorists. If they are defending a sacred Christian tradition then are the Jewish marriages invalid? If its securing safe parenting roles does that mean the barren couples are invalid? Ultimately its about societal power and control. Marriage has been used to shame and tame by conservatives for centuries. Once the gays have it all the power drains out of it and then its only about love, affection, respect, support and commitment – totally devalued :)

  23. This is ridiculous. Demanding an apology further vindicates her comments. By the way, her being divorced has absolutely nothing to do with her stance on gay marriage. One cannot pass judgment on her situation, particularly so when they have no idea of the circumstances involved.

  24. Disgraceful commentary from Ms Rudd, a nobody. Dave: I’m interested in hearing more about your comment ‘1084 pieces of discriminatory legislation’…. can you direct me to where that is documented and described? Are marriage advocates aware and pushing on this point?

  25. Loree Rudd is the only Gestapo trying to control the lives others. If she is to learn anything of her language of hate, she should learn that thousands of us were killed by the NAZI’s. The Gestapo, had us gassed in the death camps. So Loree Rudd is a true work of Evil to invoke the vile language of the NAZI.

GLBTI people are excluded from the Federal Equal Opportunity and can face discrimination in employment, private superannuation, health access, and even have trouble getting into Nursing Homes, but all this is not enough, they are still expected to put up with the 1084 pieces of legislation that discriminates against couples not married.

  26. “Divorced” and devout christian”? Is she being funny about the sanctity of marriage or what?
