Sexual health job losses strike Cairns

On-going severe cut backs to the public sector in Queensland claimed more than 200 health jobs in the north of the state last week. In the announcement made by the Health Department, three key members of the Cairns Sexual Health Clinic made up some of the over 200 retrenchments.

The positions of senior indigenous health worker, viral hepatitis health practitioner and area coordinator for HIV and sexual health and hepatitis are all set to go, in a move that has been called a “real blow” to sexual health care and awareness in the Cairns region.

“Each of the people in these positions has been a great supporter of LGBT people in our region and all have worked hard to improve our health through supporting Healthy Communities,” Queensland Association for Healthy Communities health promotions officer Nick Connor said.

“The loss of these positions will deal a great blow to the provision of effective sexual health care in Cairns and the region as each of the three people whose jobs are on the line have been great advocates for our community.”
