Ace result for girls’ tennis

Melbourne’s lesbian tennis team the Ace Girls have continued their solid success on Shepparton’s grass courts, winning two finals over the Easter break.

A team of 12 Ace Girls competed from A to D grade at the 87th annual Shepparton Lawn Tennis

Open, now a regular meet for the girls who reached four finals and featured strongly in semi-finals across the competition.

Team captain TJ said all players put in great performances, but singled out Georgina Holloway, who made both the singles and doubles finals in C grade.

“This is an incredible result,” TJ said. “I thought last year was great with three finals appearances.

“This is an excellent testament to all the hard work the team has been doing on the court and in the gym.”

TJ said the team had done well considering a number of Ace Girls players were injured.

In the four finals the Ace Girls made, Leona Knapman came runner-up in the B grade singles, bravely playing with a prolapsed pectoral muscle; Georgina Holloway came runner-up in the C grade singles; Holloway and Demetra Giannakopoulos won in the C grade doubles; and Gina Moore, with partner Chris, won the D grade mixed doubles.

Holloway said the C grade doubles match win was hard-fought.

“When we were 4-2 down in the doubles final I was a bit worried, but we reduced our unforced errors and came out on top,” she said.

“Demetra’s volleys were sensational.”

The Shepparton tournament isn’t the only competition in which the Ace Girls have achieved recent success. TJ showed form at the 2nd Asia Pacific Outgames in Wellington, New Zealand in March, where she won the women’s singles gold medal.

TJ said the team is now looking forward to the North American Outgames in Vancouver in July and the 2013 World Outgames in Antwerp, Belgium.
