Diving for life hits a milestone

Diving For Life is an annual international get together in which gay and lesbian diving enthusiasts from around the world unite to share their passion – and raise a lot of money for HIV and health-related charities in the process.

This year is Diving For Life’s 20th anniversary event, and the Sydney Underwater Bushwalking Society (SUBS), who have been supporting Diving For Life since 2004, will again be participating.

This 20th Anniversary event will be held at Casa Del Mar in Cozumel, Mexico, from September 17 to 24. The hotel is a charming hideaway facing the magnificent Caribbean Sea, surrounded by beautiful and exotic gardens with a Mexican town feeling.

There are diving and non-diving activities on offer through the week, with diving packages start at $1,188 USD – which includes six days of two tank boat dives, unlimited shore diving from the hotel, seven nights’ accommodation, three meals.

Besides the below-water activities, there will be a Mexican Fiesta night, 20th Anniversary Celebration night, live raffle and auction and the traditional closing night costume party.

So far in its 20 years, Diving For Life has raised nearly $750,000 USD and so far has been able to distribute more than $20,000 AUD to health related charities here and in the near Asia Pacific.

Diving For Life raises its charity distributions via silent raffle, live raffle and auction night. Items to be raffled or auctioned are donated by the participants. This is the most important component of the event and each club or participant looks for donations to take to the event, so even if you aren’t able to attend, feel free to approach SUBS with offers of goods/services that could be auctioned.

Registration for the 2011 event is open online at www.divingforlife.org. About 120 divers attend each year, and registrations are filling fast.
