Frontrunners prep for marathon season

Sydney’s lacklustre summer weather may have put a dent in your exercise plans, but with the fun run and marathon season about to kick off, it’s time for runners to get serious about their training.

And what better way to keep your motivation up than to join the Sydney Frontrunners gay and lesbian running group on their weekly runs?

The Frontrunners hold two runs each Saturday morning, catering to casual and more serious runners. Those looking to run a shorter distance can tackle the flat, circular track around Centennial Park — a relatively easy, picturesque run that feels shorter than its five-kilometre distance. This track is suitable for people who are new to running, with estimated run times of 20-40 minutes. The run starts at 9am (this is a later starting time than it was during summer).

Runners up for a more challenging workout can tackle the Saturday morning 12-kilometre run from Centennial Park to Bronte Beach and back. It’s a beautiful but taxing run, with some leg-busting hills and the opportunity to have a quick dip in the middle of the session.

The estimated run time is 55-75 minutes, with runners setting off at 8am (again, this is a later start time than it was in summer).

Both running groups meet in Centennial Park on the corner of Carrington Drive and Parkes Drive. If you are driving, it is best to enter Centennial Park from the Lang Rd/Grand Drive, Darley Rd/Grand Drive or Oxford St/Lock Ave entrances.

In other Frontrunners news, club members will hold more regular half-marathon training sessions in preparation for the May 20 Sydney Morning Herald half-marathon, a challenging 21.1km course which will traverse Sydney’s CBD and gardens.

The Frontrunners will also hold a social lawn bowls day on April 1, from 12.30pm. Email [email protected] for more details.
