The weather’s finally starting to warm up and Melbourne’s queer sports groups are getting ready for another bumper sports season.

There are countless LGBTI-friendly sports groups to join for all manner of sporting activities.

For those who’ve drawn inspiration from Tour de France winner Cadel Evans and want to take to two wheels, Bent Kranks is Melbourne’s bike club for gay and lesbian cyclists.

The Bent Kranks crew hits bike trails in and around Melbourne on urban bike paths and dirt tracks. Annual membership is only $20 and the group is open to cyclists of all levels.

For those who prefer to pound the pavement, Melbourne Frontrunners may better suit your style. A running and walking group for lesbians, gays and friends, the Frontrunners meet regularly for weekend runs or walks around the Tan Track.

Those keen on a slower start can join the Saturday social group for an 8.30am 4km lap of the Tan, or two laps for the more adventurous.

A longer distance run is held on Sundays at Albert Park where keen runners puff their way through 10 to 20kms.

For those who like to get back to nature, the Nomads is a gay-friendly men’s walking group. The group has more than 100 members and holds walks all over Victoria each month. In September, the Nomads will traverse the Dandenongs and visit Hanging Rock in Woodend.

Keen tennis players might like to join VicTennis, Melbourne’s long-running gay and lesbian tennis club. The group meets for social Sunday games at Malvern Tennis Club.

For girls who like to take to the court, the Ace Girls tennis club has had great success recently and meets for training on Mondays from 7–9pm.

If you’re interested in any of the above sports, visit the Queer Sports Alliance Melbourne website for more details.
