State pride at stake

Forget State of Origin, the first-ever Pride Football Australia tournament will see Melbourne and Sydney’s premier gay and lesbian soccer teams battle it out for interstate championship glory.

From October 5-7, both teams from the Melbourne Rovers will face off against the boys from Sydney Rangers FC and the girls from the Flying Bats Women’s Soccer Club at the UNSW David Phillips Field in Sydney.

The boys will be playing off for the fourth annual Justin Fashanu Cup, presented by ACON, while the girls will be playing in the inaugural Julie Murray Cup.

Both tournaments will kick off on the Saturday.

Hosted by the Rangers and the Flying Bats, both teams will start the day with an Australia vs The World exhibition friendly match.

The tournament would not be complete with some festivities which will take place at the Midnight Shift on the Friday and Saturday nights.
