Sydney claims volleyball title
The annual Spikers Queen’s Birthday volleyball tournament was held at Kew Stadium in Melbourne this month. Sydney’s very own Freezone Volleyball Club competed against teams from Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra to take out the championship.
After getting into the finals Freezone prevailed over Melbourne Spikers two sets to zero. In addition to their victory, a Sydney player was voted MVP of the tournament.
The national competitions are held three times a year, with Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide hosting once a year. Sydney will host the next tournament in August.
While the tournaments can get competitive the clubs are also recreational.
We take everyone in from different walks of life no matter what skills they have. From beginners to professional players, we take everyone in. People play in competition and there are members who simply want to upgrade their skills, Peejay Clark, Freezone support coordinator told Sydney Star Observer.
As in basketball, it does help to be tall. However, Sydney’s volleyball contingent was the shortest team at the tournament and still came up victorious.
It’s funny that we came up victorious despite being the shortest team there. I am really the only taller player on the team.
The sport involves two active teams of six players. While there are six on court, teams usually have two to four reserves.
