Taylor Square art ‘unravels’
A piece of road has been ‘unravelled’ in Taylor Square North, the first of three new art projects commissioned by City of Sydney to celebrate the area’s vibrant and artistic culture.
‘Unravel’ by Louisa Dawson is a playful sculpture which celebrates the history of Taylor Square as a busy intersection, commenting and reflecting on the challenges of city planning.
“Oxford St and its surrounds is an artistic and cultural hub,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP said.
“This new temporary public art program will engage the community and give new life to an under-used part of Taylor Square.”
Moore will open the inaugural artwork at 5.15pm on Thursday, November 26.
The program takes inspiration from London’s ‘Fourth Plinth Project’ in Trafalgar Square, where the public is consulted on which artworks will occupy the vacant fourth plinth.
The city approached local arts institutions to come up with ideas, and six concepts were displayed at Taylor Square North around ‘the plinth’ on top of the former men’s convenience. Three were chosen by members of the city’s Public Art Advisory Panel, informed by public comments sent via more than 100 SMS and email submissions.
The next artwork, ‘Underworld’ by Dale Miles, will be installed to coincide with Mardi Gras 2010. ‘Underworld’ will be a giant luminescent green spider exploding from the underground cavern.
From September 2010, Annie Kennedy will install CAMP Stonewall to celebrate the history of the gay and lesbian movement.
