The harbour’s bottom

Sydney is an amazing place, grounded in the harbour it surrounds. Many of us know the nooks and crannies as we troll the beats, walking trails and beaches.

The harbour is home to all sorts of exotic and exciting visual spectacles, including two well-preserved wrecks which are protected dive sites just off the heads. Sydney’s gay and lesbian diving club, SUBS, uses the nether reaches to enjoy their aquatic recreation.

Regular events promote diving and barbequing on a 50/50 basis, ensuring there is always plenty to do for divers and non-divers alike.

The biggest event on the club’s annual calendar combines an idyllic holiday destination with scuba diving and lazing at the pool, while participating in Diving for Life’s charity auction.

Roatan, Honduras — this year’s Diving for Life destination from October 2–9 — provides stunning sub-aqua opportunities, including reef, coral gardens, shallow and abyss dives, classic wrecks and snorkelling for those fearful of garden eels or eagle rays. SUBS encourages anyone to come to the Caribbean for this event.

SUBS co-president Matt Kaine is appealing to the Sydney gay and lesbian community to donate items that may be auctioned at the event on October 9.

“Members will travel to enjoy the diving and scenery, and participate in the final night’s charity auction,” he said.

Since becoming involved in the Diving For Life program several years ago, SUBS has raised over $19,000 for charity. The fundraising auction is totally dependent on items donated by community members to SUBS before they leave Australia.

Previous events have been well attended by the international diving community, ensuring exposure to colleagues from around the world who are aware of the wonderful diving available to them around Sydney and Australia.

Businesses or individuals who wish to donate prizes should contact Matt Kaine at newsletter@gaydive.org.au or visit www.gaydive.org.au for more information.
