Trans Theatre Symposium Puts Trans Storytelling Centre Stage

As conversations around trans visibility and representation become increasingly more important, the Trans Theatre Symposium offers a vital space to celebrate, explore and help shape the future of trans storytelling on Australian stages.
Presented by Green Door Theatre Company and Brisbane Powerhouse, the multi-day program brings together trans artists, theatre makers, emerging creatives and audiences for masterclasses, play developments, panels, showings and professional networking. It is about more than increasing visibility onstage. The symposium creates room for trans people to lead conversations about how their stories are written, developed, produced and received.
The program opens with Defining Trans Theatre, a masterclass led by director and creative producer Dino Dimitriadis, followed by Producing Your Own Work with Leila Enright. A Saturday panel discussion considers the opportunities and challenges facing trans theatre makers, before a showcase introduces audiences to works in development and existing productions.Â
Featured projects include No Seasons, Trans Christian Andersen, Tranzmission Live, New Classics: Trans Scratch Night, Aberdeen and Playlab Theatre’s Wild Abandon.
The symposium arrives at an important moment: amid a turbulent time politically for the trans community in Queensland, and globally. Brisbane has produced and welcomed an increasingly visible range of trans led theatre, cabaret and independent performance, but pathways from a promising new idea to a fully staged production can remain difficult to navigate. By combining practical development with public conversation and networking, this event gives artists opportunities to strengthen their work, meet potential collaborators and contribute to a more ambitious theatrical future.
The symposium centres trans excellence, joy and creative authority rather than treating trans experience solely as a subject for debate. Established practitioners can exchange knowledge, emerging artists can find encouragement and audiences can discover work that may define the next chapter of Australian theatre.
