USA: judge issues anti-gay ruling

A Houston, Texas judge has barred an openly gay father from leaving his children unattended with men not directly related to him as part of a custody battle with his ex-wife.

The ruling against William Flowers prevents his husband Jim Evans from being able to care for his children if he is away.

Family law attorneys called Harris County Associate Judge Charley E. Prine Jr’s ruling an “unheard-of infringement on the rights of parents” and said the decision was made solely because Flowers was gay and married to a man.

The injunction came despite a jury finding no evidence of abuse or risk of abuse, and no claims of such from his ex-wife.

The jury found Flowers was a fit and able parent who could still see his children on planned visits.

The order is legally binding and potentially prevents Flowers from leaving his children with babysitters, doctors, teachers or any other man who his not a blood relative.
