Lots of bi celebration

Lots of bi celebration

Role models and icons are important for everyone in the LGBTI community and that certainly includes those identifying as bisexual. So, as Friday, September 23 is Celebrate Bisexuality Day, it seems a good time to celebrate some great bisexual achievers.

Charlie’s angel Drew Barrymore is everyone’s angel. In 2004 she stated “A woman and a woman together are beautiful, just as a man and a woman together are beautiful”.

Pink: in 2009 she got the party started by stating clearly she identifies as bisexual. “This is who I am. Love is pure and I try to keep it that way.”

Jill Sobule, noted for the 1995 classic I Kissed a Girl (no connection to the horrible later song of the same name) stated “I’ve had experiences with women and men”.

Michael Stipe, lead singer of R.E.M, while not “defin(ing) himself as gay, straight, or bisexual, (said) that he was attracted to and had relationships with both men and women”.

The late South Australian Premier Don Dunstan, who did so much for all of the LGBT community (in 1984, South Australia was the first state to give any recognition and protection to trans folk) had relationships with both men and women.

And here’s one this fan of “sports entertainment” had to fit in — Orlando Jordan, former US heavyweight champion has declared himself bi and proud.

While artists (in the broader sense of the word) seem to dominate the lists of famous bisexuals, others include politicians and royalty.

Like gays, lesbians, transgender and intersex, bi people are everywhere, have unique skills and attributes — and possibly a touch of genius. Imagine how great our planet could be if all the genius of LGBTI people was able to flow without having to face prejudice or discrimination.

I think that’s a darn good reason to celebrate on days like Celebrate Bisexuality Day.
Bisexual Alliance Victoria will be having dinner at the Great Northern Hotel, 644 Rathdowne St, Carlton North, 7pm, Friday, September 23. All bi and bi-supportive folk welcome.

  1. I guess Katy Perry isn’t a good enough bisexual for you, huh? I mean it’s fine if you don’t like her or her music, but the fact that I was in a place of business and they were playing that song and no one was complaining about it being “inappropriate” seemed like a good thing to me. Anyway, whatever… I’ll take her :D

Thany you for the praise for the article and I agree with your comment.

The date quoted refers to recognition of transgender not sexual acts between constning adults – 2 separate achievements as part of Don Dunstan’s greatness.

  3. Dear Editor.Just a correction.to your excellent article. The legislation to legalise sexual acts between consenting adults in South Australia was actually passed a decade earlier than refered to in your article 1974.I introduced and saw passed a private members bill to achieve this reform.Having said this I take nothing away from Don Dunstan in regard to this reform without his support as Premied the bill would not have passed.Peter Duncan.Lombok Indonesia
