A celebration of us

A celebration of us

She’s here, bigger than ever.  Mardi Gras officially kicked off with a huge bang last weekend.

I meet a wide variety of people through my travels and work and I hear many different points of view. Positive comments equal comments from people who aren’t happy or could do it better.

I’m sure after finding out what is involved they would run a mile, but I smile and listen to their side of the story.

It’s usually a mix of ‘when I was young’, ‘it’s not what it used to be’, ‘why can’t they do this better’. This goes for most things, but it seems to intensify over the festive seasons, especially over MG.

I’ve always tried to see both sides and understand what is happening behind the scenes, the stuff we all think works magically and keeps these big machines rolling.

Instead of getting worked up about things, let’s try and work it so it suits us personally.

“I hate going to big parties. They are expensive and I hate crowds.” Organise a group of your gay friends and read a book. This can be inexpensive and a lot of quiet fun.

“I don’t need everyone to know I’m gay by marching down the street.”  Maybe you should take an acting class. Straight-acting is one of the hardest disciplines to learn. They used to teach it in acting studios in the ’50s and ’60s, now not so much. The hardest part for me was ‘To squeal or not to squeal — that is the question’. I got an E for that class.

“It’s too commercial and is only around because it makes so much money.” I love commercials.

Whether you love it or hate it, take it for what it is — a celebration of you being you. I love our community so much because we are allowed to be whoever we want to be and that’s what sets us apart.

Happy Mardi Gras to each and every one of you. I expect kisses all round.
