Know your rights

The NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) is proud to launch the first of a series of networking social events called the Rights Night.  The series of networking events is designed to bring together members of the lesbian and gay community to enjoy a drink, mingle and hear about current social justice issues affecting our community.

The Rights Night series will be a monthly event held at a variety of different locations in Sydney with guest speakers. The first is on Tuesday, August 3 at the Colombian Hotel on Oxford St from 7pm. The event will be free for current members of the GLRL and will cost $5 for non-members.

Become a member of the GLRL today and help us achieve equality and social justice for lesbians, gay men and their families.

Full membership is only $25 ($10 for concessions) and is essential to help fund our work. Visit www.glrl.org.au to join.

I will launch the Rights Night and speak briefly about upcoming adoption reform in NSW. The NSW Adoption Act is the last piece of legislation in NSW that directly discriminates against same-sex couples by denying them eligibility to adopt.

Discrimination in adoption law does not serve the best interests of children as it denies them rights, benefits and entitlements conferred by legal parentage.

Clover Moore recently introduced the Adoption Amendment (Same-Sex Couples) Bill into the NSW Parliament, which if passed, will put an end to this unfair discrimination.

The major parties have announced they will allow a conscience vote on the Bill, which is due to be debated and voted on in early September. We strongly encourage everyone to contact their local MPs, by writing letters and requesting meetings and urge them to support this Bill.
