New shows

As with any career there are moments when you feel totally engulfed, overwhelmed and overwrought, when you come up for air only at irregular moments.

Being a full-time showgirl is no exception. I am constantly searching for that new show concept or a look that will dazzle and stun the audience.

I think it’s that manic thought process and the thrill of performing that brings me back to the stage night after night, magically making something out of nothing, bringing alive an idea that usually is birthed over a couple of shandies.

Just as spring warms up Oxford St, new shows are starting to pop up to entertain. After weeks of preparation, reconsideration and more preparation Maxi and Verushka’s High School Reunion show downstairs at the Midnight Shift is saying goodbye.

Verushka and I are frantically pulling together a new extravaganza which will open on 12 October -“ that gives you plenty of time to recover from Sleaze Ball.

So what goes into a new show? Is it a case of throwing a couple of songs together and whipping up a new outfit? And haven’t our audiences seen it all anyway?

It is certainly getting harder for showgirls to continue coming up with fresh and interesting shows that are unique and interesting, but that don’t break the bank.

We also have to consider the fact there are very few stages to perform on at the moment. With clubs and hotels closing down all the time it is important we as a community get out there and show our support for our spaces, be they venues or just the strip itself.

Watch the shows, buy a drink (even water), have a chat and enjoy the atmosphere.
And for those who don’t care for drag shows, fear not. I promise I won’t take up more than 20 minutes of your time with the new production.

Verushka is a great partner to have and she is the queen of the short, sharp show that leaves the crowd wanting more.

And let’s face it, the more we do that, the more likely you are to return for another look.

So keep your eyes on the paper for details about the crop of new shows sprouting faster than a marigold seed this spring -“ and get out there and support your community at the same time.
