The fight goes on

The fight goes on

The last year has been an extremely busy one for the NSW Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) as the fight for equality continues.

While a great deal of the work undertaken by the GLRL happens behind the scenes, some of our more prominent activities undertaken in 2009 include submissions and subsequent follow-up lobbying to the NSW Adoption and Surrogacy Inquiries, and submissions to the National Human Rights and Marriage Equality Bill Inquiries. We also ran our City of Sydney-funded education campaign following the 58’08 federal reforms and the NSW co-mothering reforms.

Finally, we hired new staff, launched a new website for the organisation, and ran another successful Mardi Gras season for the GLRL, but of course our work continues.

Last Thursday the GLRL held its Annual General Meeting and elected a new committee of management. We would like to thank our 2009 committee for their support and assistance over the past year, as without their tireless work the GLRL would not be able to continue fighting for full legislative and social equality. We would also like to congratulate and welcome on board our new committee, especially those who have been elected for the first time.

There are two vacancies remaining on the committee for a treasurer and a secretary. We invite members of the community who may be interested in filling these positions to contact us via [email protected] or by phone on 9571 5501. You must be, or become, a full member of the organisation to be eligible.

2010 is set to be an even busier year, with the GLRL set to launch a number of initiatives early in the year. As an organisation we look to broaden our community engagement, diversify our income, strengthen and expand our volunteer management, improve our website, and continue to provide information and resources to the community.

In terms of our campaigns, we will continue our fight for NSW adoption and surrogacy reform, launch our campaign for comprehensive federal anti-discrimination provisions, and formalise our civil marriage campaign.

Finally, we would like to thank all our members, supporters, and volunteers. Without their dedicated assistance we would not be able to continue our work. On behalf of the GLRL committee of management we wish everybody a happy and safe holiday season and a fantastic new year, where together we can continue the fight for full equality.
