Sydney Star Observer columnist Maxi Shield took out the Queen of Hearts award at the DIVAs on Monday night.
Shield, who this year was instrumental in campaigning for a tougher police presence on Oxford St, stole the awards in her Penguin-inspired feathered creation.
“There’s something a bit more heartfelt about winning an award like this — you’re doing something positive for the community rather than having a judge come along to see you perform,” she said.
“I’m happy to win something, but I don’t go to win. At the DIVAs you’re supposed to be glamorous and each drag queen is trying to get the most attention. When I walked into the room I had everyone looking at me. I guess as a professional showgirl it’s always good to show everyone else that I just don’t wear a pretty dress and do things out of the box.”
As well as the anti-violence campaign, Shield is the mascot for the gay rugby world champions the Sydney Convicts, and gives up her spare time to help out with causes such as ACON’s Fun and Esteem program and the City of Sydney.
“I have a big mouth and it’s good to use it. I was lucky to get the opportunity to help the community, but it is still baby steps,” she said of the Oxford St violence situation.
“I think it would be silly for people to expect things to change straight away. In the meantime it’s important to be aware and report anything that happens — we must look out for our gay brothers and sisters.”

You are awesome and you’ll always be awesome. Keep doing what you’re doing because I think you’ve won more hearts than you realise. You’re championing a really good cause and although it’s baby steps and the changes are taking time, there’s been more movement lately than has been for a while. Well done Maxi and congratulations. P.S. I’m so jealous you got to go to Ireland with those hunky georgeous men he he he.
