Landmark Japanese government notice urges schools to accommodate trans* students

JAPAN’s Ministry of Education has this week issued a notice to its school encouraging them to allow trans* students to wear the uniform of the gender they identify as.

The recommendation also asks schools from elementary level to high school to also allow trans* students to use the bathroom and locker room of their choice.

According to the Japan Times, the landmark notice that was sent out on Thursday, April 30 urged schools to do more to cater to children who believe they were born to the wrong gender.

The notice also called for “greater accommodation” of other “minority” students such as gay, lesbian and bisexuals.

While some Japanese schools are already accommodating to its trans* students, the ministry’s notice now urges all schools to follow suit.
