Marriage protests target Katter

Marriage equality advocates will hold a same-sex marriage rally outside Queensland MP Bob Katter’s Mount Isa electoral office next month.

Local resident James Newburrie (pictured) revealed on his Twitter account he will lead the protest on Sunday, September 11, following the appearance of Katter’s half-brother Carl on Channel 10 last night.

“Inspired by Carl Katter – Mt Isa will have its first #equallove rally on Sunday 11/9 in front of Bob’s office,” Newburrie tweeted.

Openly gay Newburrie recently made fun of the Kennedy MP’s past comments about homosexulity in an opinion piece for the ABC’s Drum website.

In the late 1980s Katter famously claimed he would walk backwards from Bourke to Brisbane if there was a homosexual living in his electorate.

In the piece Newburrie expressed concern at comments made by his local MP at a pro-marriage rally that gay marriage should be “ridiculed and laughed at”.

“The speeches ‘in defence of marriage’ bother me because it clearly says to every gay kid in the bush that they will never be truly welcome in their hometowns,” Newburrie wrote.

“Even if they share all other values with their communities, except for the gender of those they love.

“[It] reinforce[s] the belief that homosexuals are second-class citizens.”

Newburrie has also launched a petition calling for same-sex marriage on social media platform Facebook. He is seeking more than 32,000 signatures to rival a list of opposing voices collected by Family Voice Australia and handed to Katter this month.

The Facebook group curently has almost 4000 supporters.

  1. James does a great job standing up for common sense and equality, and all from Mt Isa in Bob Katter’s Queensland electorate. It’s important to show support by clicking things on our computers and writing emails, however James is one of those rare people that goes further by writing opinion pieces, challenging politicians to engage, doing radio interviews and organising rallies. He’s doing an impressive job and has gained my support for the 32001names Facebook page.

  2. Good on you James! I hope it goes well!

It would be nice to see Bob Katter walk back to Bourke, but that would involve him being honest.
