Derby rolls with the force

Sydney Roller Derby League (SRDL) fans can look forward to a night of Star Wars-inspired mayhem at the Roller Wars bout between the Sydney City Assassins and Canberra all-star team the Vice City Rollers at the Hordern on Saturday, October 9.

Billed as an “an epic, all-star battle to rule the roller derby world as we know it,” fans are encouraged to dress for the Star Wars theme, with the best dressed likely to take home a free SRDL T-shirt.

SRDL vice-president Miss Biff told Sydney Star Observer that the Star Wars theme was about packing in the fun at an already exciting event and that themed bouts had become a regular feature of inter-league competitions.

“Different people in the league come up with the ideas and artwork, and Roller Wars shows we’ve got a few Star Wars fans in our league,” Miss Biff said.

The last themed event was the Roller Derby Horror Show, a Rocky Horror Picture Show themed battle between Sydney’s Pistola Cholas and Wollongong’s Steel City Derby Dolls on September 11, which the Cholas won 102-61.

“It was a fantastic event,” Miss Biff said. “We had a performance group do a section of their Rocky Horror Picture Show and their dancing and outfits were just fantastic.”

On October 9 the Pistola Cholas take on the Smackdown Sallies in a mini-bout from 6.30pm with the main Sydney-Canberra bout starting at 7.30pm.

Miss Biff said the Pistola Cholas and the Smackdown Sallies were both new Sydney teams that would appear at more bouts between now and the end of the year.
