Abbott daughters support gay marriage

Tony Abbott has refused to allow the federal Coalition a conscience vote on gay marriage despite two of his daughters coming out in support of marriage equality.

In an interview with News Limited, Frances and Bridget Abbott revealed they support gay marriage and have discussed the issue repeatedly with their father.

Frances, 21, said she believes gay marriage is “inevitable”.

“Dad and I have had a few discussions about it. I believe by the time our generation gets into power I hope and pray something is done about marriage equality and gay rights,” she said.

Bridget, 20, added that seeing her openly gay aunt, Liberal City of Sydney councilor Christine Forster, become happy with partner Virginia Edwards had strongly influenced her own views.

“I just think being gay is a lot more accepted and open for our generation. Chris and Virginia are a completely normal couple. They’re exactly the same as Mum and Dad except they happen to both be women,” Bridget said.

The opposition leader defended his views on Sky News on Sunday night.

“Coalition party policy is that marriage is between a man and a woman. While it’s party policy there’s no question of a conscience vote. It only becomes a free vote if there is no policy on the subject,” Abbott said.
