NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Meets Gay Dutch Prime Minister At LGBTQ+ Community Centre

On Thursday afternoon, New York City Mayor, Zohran Mamdani and the Netherlands’ gay prime minister, Rob Jetten met at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in Manhattan. There, the pair sat down with young queer people and archivists to learn more about the centre’s work.
According to The Advocate, who first reported this story, youth participants shared the positive impact the centre had had on their lives, alongside sharing artwork and zines they had contributed to the centre’s archives.
“It’s a really beautiful thing to hear all of you speak about the importance of this place, having created a community in this center,” a spokesperson for The Advocate observed Mamdani telling the young people assembled.
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten also spoke fondly of the occasion in a statement he posted to his official Instagram page.
“An absolute pleasure to meet mayor Mamdani here in his city,” Jetten wrote in Dutch. “We visited a community center in West Village together. The Netherlands and New York are historically inseparable linked. And in these times we share the same challenges. For example, building more affordable homes and ensuring a safe and livable community for all.
“We also spoke about the great importance of both the Netherlands and New York’s adherence to and defense of the rights of the LGBTQ community, at a time when those rights are under pressure worldwide.”
Jetten & Mamdani’s Track Record Of LGBTQ+ Allyship
Jetten, the Netherlands’ youngest and first openly gay prime minister, is known for his progressive stance on climate action, equality, and social liberalism. Jetten has also been transparent about (and proud of) his sexuality throughout his career in politics, speaking about what it was like growing up gay in a small town, and the importance of visibility.
Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who was inaugurated earlier this year, is also known for his LGBTQ+ allyship. Shortly after his election, Mamdani established the city’s first dedicated Mayor’s Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs, with a prominent transgender civil rights lawyer appointed to lead the new agency.
